To answer Cole question i think that since this book is science fiction when they enter Stargate David Bowman transformes into a highly superior being with amazing aspects, and one of those types of aspects is seeing and holding the future for mankind. To hold the galaxy in his mind and control his thoughts. Thats probably why the aliens sent out the Monoliths from the beginning of the book. They wanted somebody who has a mental view and mind of the Universe.
